Weaver Interlock – Unit 1

Concepts:

1)      God is our Father who always was, is now, and always will be.

2)      God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, and God the Son are one.

3)      Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit all worked together to create our World.

Day 1:

Wrap a globe (Dinoz) and give it to Jelly Bean.  Have her open it.  Explain to her that Earth is a gift from God.  God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit all worked together to make our World.  Show Jelly Bean the Wall Maps (Dinoz) and a picture of Earth from space (Planet Earth Flash Cards).  Explain that these three represent the same thing- Earth.  Even though they are three separate representations of Earth- they all represent the same thing.  God created everything on our Earth- from the tiniest ladybug, to the big beautiful trees, to the Big Blue Ocean, and even the cloud-filled sky God made everything and Jesus and the Holy Spirit helped.  God loves us very much.  Just like your Daddy on Earth loves you- God our Heavenly Father loves you too.

Ask the following questions-

1)      Why do you love your Daddy?

2)      What do you like to do with Daddy?

3)      How does Daddy let you know he loves you?

4)      When do you like to spend time with Daddy?

Art- Let’s draw a picture of Daddy.

Color a picture of Earth (p. 2 of resource section)

While Jelly Bean is drawing I will read the two below:

Read p. 116-117 Core Knowledge Kindergarten about Earth and its water formations/ the seven Continents/North, South, East, and West.

Read Three Little Ducks (p. 5 of Interlock).

Brain Quest- Shape Practice- Jelly Bean already knows her shapes/ colors but this was an overview and a more in-depth look at geometric shapes.  Jelly Bean also got onto Starfall.com and practiced her reading skills/ and shape practice.

Music-

Sing Daddy, Daddy we love you (p. 7 Interlock)

Read Genesis 21:1-8 (Abraham and Isaac) from Little Girl’s Storybook for Mother’s and Daughter’s

This day turned out wonderful- we completed it on June 15, 2009.  Sunshine even joined in with Jelly Bean and Me : )

Day 2:

Read John 14

Explain that Jesus was with God when he made the Earth.  Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden and because of this Jesus came to Earth as a baby to make it possible for us to go to heaven one day.  Jesus lived and grew up on Earth. And then he died for our sins when he was crucified on the cross.  Jesus rose 3 days later and defeated death.  Jesus is alive to today and with God creating beautiful homes in heaven for us.

Art- Color and explain the above again while Jelly Bean colors (p. 3 of Resource section).

Use a stuffed animal to talk about and learn our home address

Brain Quest- Page 268 (Kindergarten) Work on learning home address

Science-

Brain Quest (Preschool) work on animal homes “Habitats” p. 276-287

Read-

The Country and City Mouse

Moral of the Story- It is better to live in peace and be secure, then to live in danger.  Explain the similarity to living with Jesus in our life and those who live without him.  Further explain living with Christ and resisting the evils/ temptations of this world to have eternal life.

Music-

Around the Circle we will go (p.11 Interlock) Point out shapes.

Brain Quest- Preschool page 220-228 “Shapes”

Art-

Sit in front of house and draw/ color a picture of our house.  Point out the shapes of our house.

Explain that just like Daddy works very hard to make sure we have a place to live.

God and Jesus are working to make a home for us in Heaven.  The Holy Spirit is with us now to help people who trust in Jesus and obey God’s word.  The Holy Spirit is with us now to help us do good things and resist the evils of the World.  We get this feeling within us and are able to tell the difference between wrong and right.

Talk about what Heaven may look like.

Art- Draw a picture of what Heaven may look like.

Day 3:

Read Genesis 1:2 and reiterate that Jesus was with God when they made Earth.

Talk about what things we like on Earth.

Read Poem on p. 13-14 Interlock

Tell Jelly Bean that God tells the truth all the time.  What God says is ALWAYS true.  Truth means when someone says they will do something they do it.  Truth means we are honest.

Physical Education- page 15 and 19 Interlock

Day 4:

Read Genesis 1:26 by this passage we know there was more than one personage present in creation.

Read Colossians 1:13-16 this passage states that Jesus created, with God, all things.

Read Genesis 1:2 this passage states that the Holy Spirit was upon the face of the water.

Science-

Experiment with Egg (p. 17 Interlock).

Read the Bible Story on page 17 in Interlock.

Weaving with Weaver Interlock Studies through Summer 2009  www.aophomeschooling.com

Jelly Bean was learning about how just like Mommy’s have babies- Animals also have babies too.  God created Land Animals and Humans on the Sixth day (Genesis 1:24-25).  In reference- Man (Adam) in Genesis 2:7 and Woman (Eve) in Genesis 2:22.

Jelly bean learned:

Day 1:

-Every baby animal and every human baby has a Mommy and a Daddy.  Jelly Bean learned that Mommies and Daddies care for their babies.  God gave us an “instinct” (a vocabulary word), which makes us want to care for our offspring.  We know by instinct how to feed you (example given- babies drink milk and eat baby food and when they grow they eat what we eat), keep you warm (example given-in the Winter we dress you in a coat to keep you warm),and love you (gave Jelly Bean a huge hug).  God loves our whole family and wants us to take care of one another.

- When God made Mommies, he made it possible for us to have babies.  All girls can have babies.  God could have continued to create all humans, but instead he chose for Mommies to have babies (Reproduce- another Vocabulary word), found in Genesis 1:25 and 28, and babies need to be cared for by their Mommies and Daddies to grow big and strong and healthy.

-God wants babies to have both Mommies and Daddies

-Just like God created Mommies and Daddies, he also created animals.  Animal Mommies have babies too.  At this time I showed her our family picture and a picture of a Momma bear and her cub (from National Geographic Kids).  I also asked her if she would like to see more baby animals and we flipped through the Zootles magazine “Animal Babies”.  I told Jelly Bean that God created all sorts of animals and that he made each species (vocabulary word) different, so we could tell them apart.

- We read from another Zootles magazine a poem titled, “Tigers”.

- We went on a Safari with her explorer hat and binoculars.  We creeped along on our knees and talked in quiet voices to not disturb or scare away the animals.  Fairy Girl and Sunshine had went around the house and hid stuffed animals all throughout the house.  We had an Elephant with a baby elephant (they sprayed us along our Safari : ), we had a monkey family hanging from the chandelier, we ran into a cheetah but it was too fast and got away, and saw a big brown bear (but Goldilocks mysteriously was no where to be found), we saw a giraffe, and a few others.  Oh, and a Camel spit on us on the way out.  Watch out for that Camel!

Day Two:

-I asked Jelly Bean if she knew that God made each of us special? I gave her the example that Sunshine has straight hair and she has curly.  I continued with telling her that just as God made all humans special- he also made each animal special too.  I handed her a picture of a Cheetah (From National Geographic Kids) and told her that Cheetahs can run really fast.  I then handed her a picture of an Elephant (From National Geographic Kids) and told her that Elephants are special too but they move really slow.  I then told Jelly Bean that every human and animal has a special job to do.  That for example, the Elephant can move heavy objects.  I asked her what special strengths did God give her? She answered that she can love Mommy.  I took her hug and continued : ) I told her that God gave Daddy the special job of being strong and Daddy has strength through God in all that he does.  That Daddy works very hard to take care of our family.  I told her that God gave Mommy the special job to take care of her and her brother and sisters.

- I showed Jelly Bean the picture of a Zebra (National Geo Kids) and a Giraffe (National Geo Kids) and asked her how they were different.  She concluded that the Zebra has stripes (to blend in) and the Giraffe has a long neck (to reach the tip top of a tree and eat the leaves).  I then read her “Giraffe Kisses” from a Zootles magazine.

Day 3:

-We have Wall Maps of the World with Animals and such all over them applicable to their regions (by Dinoz).  I had Jelly Bean point to different animals on the map.  I showed her where we live and notated that Animals live all over the world.  I handed Jelly Bean a pic of the Earth to show her a contrast between the wall map and a globe and then handed her a globe by Dinoz.  I then showed her that while Penguins live in the arctic because it is cold- Camels live in the Desert because it is hot.  I had Jelly Bean’s stuffed Camel and handed it to her.  I shared with her that Camels are sometimes called “The Ship of the Desert” because it carried large loads across the Desert.  I told her that the Desert is a very hot place and sometimes there is no water for miles and miles.  I then handed her a picture of her Daddy in the Desert.  I told her that the Camel was made by God to have a special job to do and that he made the Camel to not need very much water, so it can travel for miles and miles and not get thirsty.  I asked her if she remembered our trip to the local beach and how the sand was really hot.  I told her that Camel’s feet are special and God designed the Camel’s feet, so the hot sand does not hurt its feet and had her touch the stuffed animals feet.  I then asked her what she thought was in the Camel’s hump and pointed to the Camel’s hump and after giving her a minute to think about it- I told her it was water.

- I then shared with Jelly Bean that God gave us animals as a gift and we must care for what God has given us.  I used the example of our Dogs, Kelsey and Scribbles.  Kelsey and Scribbles job is to protect us and to love us.  I told her that if we do not take care of our dogs they could die.  That we take care of the dogs by bathing them, brushing them, feeding them, watering them, etc… This led into our discussion about animals that are Extinct (Vocabulary word).  Extinct means that an animal no longer exists.  I used the example of the Bison and handed her a picture (National Geo Kids) and explained that humans destroyed their homes and food (Grasses and Trees) and explained that the Bison was in danger of becoming extinct because Humans did not take care of them properly.  I then handed her a picture of a Polar Bear (National Geo Kids) and explained that Polar Bears are in danger of becoming extinct because the ice they live on is melting because Humans are not taking care of the Earth properly.

Day 4:

- Today we are going to the Zoo to finish our studies.

- Gave Jelly Bean a book titled, “1001 Animals to Spot” by Usborne books to look at on the way to the Zoo.  We took our Colorado hat (Explorer Hat) and Binoculars.  I had pinned a Girl Scout pin on her hat of an Elephant (her first fun patch).

- Went to the Zoo

- Emma got a Hug Giraffe and a few postcards of Mommy and Baby Animals

- I gave Jelly Bean “Drawing Animals” by Usborne and this concluded our studies of Animals/ and Mommies/ Daddies (For Now).

I wanted to share pieces of an article written by Rick Boyer, which I found in the Home Educator’s of Virginia Spring 2009 magazine-

With July 4th approaching, Rick Boyer reflects on what he learned in school while growing up in a small town in Kansas in contrast to what is taught in schools today, “…We were taught that America was a special place, and that out roots were sunk deep in the blessing and purposes of God.  Much has changed. That, of course, is just one of the reasons my children aren’t in public school…In 1962-1963…the Supreme court threw prayer and bible reading out of school.  Not coincidentally, academic achievement plummeted and social problems immediately skyrocketed…Our founders knew that there is an authority higher than human government.  That’s why the Declaration refers to God no less than four times.  That’s why it says that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights.  By our Creator, not by our governmentOur governments’ s only legitimate job is to protect and secure those God-given rights.

I want my kids to know that God gave America life and that He has big plans for her. I want them to know that our founder were not Deists, but overwhelmingly godly or God-fearing men.  That 27 of the 56 signers of the Declaration has seminary degrees.  That 124 of the first 126 colleges started in this country as Christian schools. I want them to know.

I want my kids to know that there was a terrible price paid in blood and treasure in the pains of the War of Independence, and that other great costs have been incurred throughout our history.  That freedom is never free because freedom has many dedicated enemies.  That others before us have sacrificed to pass it down to us, and that we must sacrifice in our own turn for those who come after.  That America, with all her blemishes, is still the best, most blessed, most free nation that has ever existed on earth. I want them to understand that freedom is so terribly precious that life without her in not fully living.

I want my kids to know.”
